Abstract
Abstract The electrooxidation of 4-aminobiphenyl in acidic aqueous solution leads to the formation of a uniform conducting polymer film which presents a fibrillar morphology. Poly(4-aminobiphenyl) derives probably from head-to-tail couplings that give a polymer structure similar to poly(aniline) and poly(p-phenylene). The resulting polymer was also characterized by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry. The polymer film colour changes from yellow to green and then to brown between 0.0 V and 1.0 V vs. SCE in 2M HC1. The electrochromic properties are related to the formation of polarons which are subsequently oxidized into diimine species followed by the oxidation of the aromatic rings.
