Abstract
Abstract A hydrolyzate prepared from ferric nitrate solutions at 80°C. affords sufficient X-ray and electron diffraction effects that, taken in conjunction with density determinations, infrared absorption character, published magnetic susceptibility data, and differential thermal analysis, a crystal structure model may be deduced which is compatible with the several properties. The model is related to hematite, but has an a -axis of 5.08 A and a c -axis of 9.4 A. The cell content is near Fe 5 HO 8 ·4H 2 O. The hydrated ferric oxide recoverable from ferritin exhibits substantially the same diffraction diagram, but somewhat more diffuse, and approaches the precipitated product in each of the supplemental analyses.
