Abstract
Abstract The electrochemical reduction mechanism of isophthalonitrile (1,3-benzenedicarbonitrile) has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and polarography. In anhydrous DMF, the anion radical formed by quasi-reversible one-electron transfer undergoes dimerisation through radical—radical coupling. Comparison of the experimental results with theoretical working curves allows calculation of the relevant kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the electrode process. The addition of water accelerates the process. Such an effect is accounted for by the participation of anion radical/water complexes in dimerisation.
