Abstract
Abstract The reaction of 5-deoxypyridoxal with α-phenyl-α-aminomalonic acid in the presence of excess Cu 2+ ions is shown to lead to the formation of N -5-deoxypyridoxoyl-α-phenylglycine, III , as the only 5-deoxypyridoxal-derived product. This reaction occurs anaerobically under very mild conditions of temperature and pH and involves the oxidative formation of a peptide bond. It represents a hitherto undescribed reaction type for vitamin B 6 and its analogs; a mechanism for the reaction is proposed.
