Abstract
Abstract Rubidium-82 is one of the very promising positron emitters to be used for positron tomography. The short half-life of 82 Rb (75 s) allows significant reduction of the radiation dose to patients and hospital personnel. 82 Rb is obtained from a generator system as a daughter nuclide of 82 Sr with a half-life of 25 days. This investigation was devoted to the problem of 82 Sr formation with a cyclotron to be used in the 82 Sr 82 Rb generator. The cyclotron target was RbCl (99% 85 Rb) in which the 82 Sr was formed by the reaction 85 Rb(p,4n) using a 70 MeV proton beam of the inner cyclotron bunch at a current of up to 75 μA. Chemical processing of the irradiated target included chromatographic isolation of strontium with the help of an ion exchange column. The target construction, experimental methods and results are presented.
