Abstract
The facilities provided by the medical research cyclotron are described and present applications in medical research are reviewed. The cyclotron provides a fast neutron beam suitable for use in radiotherapy and radiobiological research; deuteron and alpha particle beams for research in fundamental radiobiology, biochemistry, and activation analysis; and a series of radioactive isotopes with properties different from those produced in nuclear reactors. The completion of the 4-portal beam transport system late in 1962, together with the availability of a new experimental room for the neutron and charged-particle beams outside the main cyclotron radiation shield, increased the effectiveness of the cyclotron for medical applications.
