Abstract
Abstract The slow thermolysis of ammonium dichromate crystals is studied by means of differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. Four consecutive reactions clearly occur. The nature of the intermediate compounds is determined by X-ray diffraction, labeling by radioactive tracers and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Effluent gases are analyzed by gas chromatography, manometric and potentiometric techniques. Analysis of the data obtained by these different methods yield the following reaction sequence: ammonium dichromate, a non-stoichiometric compound of Cr(V), chromium dioxide, dichromium trioxide. The overall reaction is expressed by 3(NH 4 ) 2 Cr 2 O 7 → 3 Cr 2 O 3 + 2N 2 + 2NH 3 + 3 2 O 2 + 9H 2 O .
