Abstract
Electrochemical degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) was studied by flow-through electrolysis in acetonitrile (AN). At potentials < −2.4 V vs. Ag/10 mM Ag+ (AN), TCE was converted quantitatively to chloroacetylene, which was reduced further to acetylene at −2.8 V in a 96% yield. The concentration of released chloride ion and the electrolysis current that were determined experimentally agreed well with those calculated from the results of product analysis. Addition of water to the AN accelerated the rate of the formation of acetylene, decreasing the concentration of the intermediate chloroacetylene.
