Abstract
Mercaptoethylguanidine (MEG) lowers norepinephrine (NE) levels in the hearts of mice and cats. Brain norepinephrine is unaffected. The ganglionic blocking agent hexamethonium raises norepinephrine levels in cat heart, suggesting that the norepinephrine-depleting properties of mercaptoethylguanidine are not the result of its ganglionic blocking properties. Mercaptoethylguanidine lowers norepinephrine levels in isolated cat atria, constituting further evidence for a direct depleting effect.
