Abstract
The presence of trivalent manganese is implicated in a number of redox-active metalloenzymes, including the photosynthetic oxygen-evolving complex, superoxide dismutase, pseudocatalase, and ribonucleotide reductase. Considerable effort has been focused on the synthesis and characterization of inorganic complexes as structural models for these biological metal centers. In this communication data is presented of X-band EPR spectra of S = 2 spin states of 3 trivalent manganese complexes, including the mononuclear manganese (III) tris(acetylacetonate) and tris-(picolinate) coordination complexes and the weakly antiferromagnetically exchange coupled binuclear complex Mn{sub 2} {sup III,III}O(O{sub 2}CCH{sub 3}){sub 2}(HB(pz){sub 3}){sub 2} (HB(pz){sub 3} = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate).
