Abstract
Abstract Ethylenediamine and the primary amino groups of its higher homologues of the formula H 2 N(CH 2 CH 2 NH) n CH 2 CH 2 NH 2 ( n = 1,2) selectively form stable azomethyne chelates with 2,2-diphenyl-1-oxa-3-oxonia-2-boratanaphthalene (abbreviated to DOOB; salicylaldehyde—diphenylboron chelate). They can be separated from higher-molecular-weight hardeners and quantitated by means of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) with UV or fluorescence detection. Owing to its good UV absorption, 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane was determined by means of RP-HPLC without derivatization; however, it may be derivatized in the same way. The performance and reproducibility of the methods were tested in a joint study with five manufacturers of epoxy resins and amines.
