Abstract
Abstract A rapid simultaneous extraction-methylation procedure was developed for the gas chromatographic analysis of four chlorinated phenoxyacetic acids [2,3- and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acids (2,3- and 2,4-D), 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) and (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)propionic acid (MCPP)_in soil samples. While the four acidic herbicides are extracted from the soil, they are esterified in situ to their methyl esters using an organic solubilizer; of those investigated, benzyltrimethylammonium chloride was the most efficient. The recoveries and precisions for all four herbicides were high (2,3-D, 96.6 ± 2.1%; 2,4-D, 96.4 ± 2.8%; 2,4,5-T, 96.6 ± 2.3%; MCPP, 94.6 ± 3.0%). For comparison, separation and determination by liquid chromatography were also applied.
