Abstract
Abstract The use of 4-bromomethyl-7-methoxycoumarin as a derivatizing reagent for fatty acids is examined. The usefulness of the compound for quantitative analysis is limited by the susceptibility of the coumarin ring to base-catalyzed solvolysis. When the derivatization is carried out under conditions which minimize the exposure of the coumarin to base, the reaction is reproducible and yields an amount of derivative that is linearly related to the amount of fatty acid starting material.
