Abstract
Abstract A method for the determination of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in tissues and natural waters is described. The PCP is extracted from the acidified sample with n -hexane and then re-extracted into a borax solution. It is then acetylated by extracting with n -hexane containing acetic acid anhydride and pyridine. The resulting pentachlorophenyl acetate is analysed by gas chromatography using an electron capture detector. The PCP content in fish from a lake into which PCP is discharged is reported. The data obtained indicate that PCP accumulate in aquatic organisms. The identity of the PCP was established by combined gas chromatographic —mass spectrometric analysis.
