Abstract
This study focuses on the capability of 2-ethylhexyl caprate, laurate, and palmitate for diesel engines, of which pour points are -50 and lower, -32.5, and -2.5 degree Celsius respectively. All of them have excellent oxidative stability and high cetane number. The engine-bench test results show that 2-ethylhexyl laurate and palmitate produce short ignition delays compared to diesel fuel. The rate of heat release due to the initial premixed combustion is suppressed. As the result, high brake thermal efficiency together with low combustion noise is achieved. Furthermore, laurate and palmitate give not only lower nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission, but also unburned gaseous emissions due to their short ignition delay.
