Abstract
The crosslinked polymer, poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid-co-n-butylmethacrylate) [poly (AMPS/BMA)], was synthesized to study the effect of electric current on solute release. Edrophonium chloride, a positively charged solute was released in an on-off pattern from a poly(AMPS/BMA) monolithic device with electric stimulus. The on-off release mechanism of the positively charged solute was explained as an ion exchange between positive solute and hydroxonium ion, followed by fast release of the exchanged solute from the gel. The fast release was attributed to the electrostatic force, squeezing effect and the electro-osmosis of the gel. However, the release of neutral solute hydrocortisone was controlled by diffusion mechanism affected by swelling and deswelling of the gel.
