Abstract
determined by algorithms. From AI generated movie trailers, to filters on our phones which automatically edit our pictures to meet the norms of ‘good photography’, Manovich argues that there are some choices to be made about how we see this move towards AI driven aesthetics. The second section of the book, entitled ‘AI and Analysis of Culture’ focuses on the way that AI is used to mine and analyse the ‘data’ of digital culture, particularly by academics from various fields. Manovich gives a number of examples of the way that AI has been used to analyse large datasets of visual images from platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, and it is his exploration of the potential knowledge generated by these analyses that will probably prove most interesting to colleagues working in the fields of Visual Culture and Visual theory.
