Abstract
Abstract 1. 1. 2,4-Dichlorophenol (DCP), frequently present as an impurity in samples of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), stimulates the activity of indoleacetic acid oxidase of pea epicotyls. The optimum concentration is 2 × 10 −5 M and inhibition occurs above 5 × 10 −4 M . Pure 2,4-D free of DCP is completely without effect on the enzyme. 2. 2. The enhancement of the activity of the enzyme of DCP is attributed to its cofactor-like activity. 3. 3. The basic structural requirement for activity is that of a phenol. The activity may be greatly enhanced or depressed by various substituents in the ring.
