Abstract
Background/Aims: To investigate the protective effects of 2(3)-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyanisole(BHA) on liver injury induced by acetaminophen in mice. Methods: Liver injuries were induced by acetaminophen injected intraperitoneally, serum ALT, and MDA, SOD, GSH in the liver were determined. Results: Both 0.2% and 0.5% of BHA markedly suppressed the elevation of serum ALT and liver MDA induced by acetaminophen, they also inhibited the decrease of liver SOD and GSH contents in acetaminophen treated mice. Conclusions: BHA could significantly prevent the liver injury caused by acetaminophen. The protective mechanism of BHA might include the increase in scavenging of free radicals and inhibition of lipid peroxidation.
