Abstract
Abstract The complete infrared and Raman spectra of monomethyl fumaryl chloride have been recorded and a tentative vibrational assignment has been proposed. Comparison of the liquid and solid phase infrared spectra indicate the presence of a conformational equilibrium mixture in the liquid phase. Comparison of the frequencies of the carbonyl and carbon-carbon double-bond stretching modes with those of other molecules of the fumarate and acrylate series has allowed conclusions concerning the conjugative interaction in these molecules to be drawn. It is shown that the carbon-carbon double bond stretching frequency in the fumarate series is exceptionally high for a formally conjugated system.
