Abstract
A nitrofuran derivative, 3-amino-6[2(5-nitro-2-furyl)vinyl]-1, 2, 4-triazine hydrochloride is a potent inducing agent for the formation of λ-phage in Escherichia coli K12(λ) cells. 3-Amino-6-[2(5-nitro-2-furyl)vinyl]-1, 2, 4-triazine hydrochloride, within a certain range of concentration, specifically inhibits the net increase in DNA without affecting the concentration of either RNA or protein in the E. coli cells. The inhibitory action of 3-amino-6-[2(5-nitro-2-furyl)vinyl]-1, 2, 4-triazine hydrochloride is a summation of the inhibition of DNA synthesis and the degradation of DNA following treatment with the agent. The inhibition of DNA synthesis is considered to be involved in the decrease in priming activity of DNA as well as the derepression in the thymidine triphosphate production step. On the basis of the data obtained, the mechanism of induction of the development of prophage in lysogenic bacteria is discussed.
