Abstract
In cyclopropylidenephosphorane there exists, in addition to the usual out-of-plane p,-d, bonding, a geometrically unique possibility for interaction between the Walsh orbitals of the cyclopropane ring and an in-plane P 3d orbital. A shortened PC bond, long PC-C bonds, and a short H2C-CHs bond are predicted. The effect of the P 3d orbitals being occupied is also manifested in the barrier to rotation about the C-C bond in ethylidenephosphorane. he synthesis and reactions of the interesting phosT phonium ylide 1 have been reported by Bestmann and coworkers. In a recent study of bonding in phosY Phb,P=C'I Ph '\ CH2 LZ H->=C H8. ,H
