Abstract
3•Œ,4•Œ-Dichloropropionanilide (propanil), a herbicide used on rice fields to control weeds, is degraded microbiologically in soil. The degradative pathway includes, 3, 4-dichloroaniline as a primary intermediate, two molecules of which link oxidatively to produce 3, 3•Œ, 4, 4•Œ-tetrachloroazobenzene (Bartha and Pramer 1967). Since the biological activity of pesticide residues is of concern to soil fertility and public health and welfare, we have investigated the influence of these compounds on nuclear division in root cells of Allium cepa L. (Smith and Lofty 1955). A. cepa (n=16) bulbs were germinated in the dark. When roots were 2 to 4cm long, they were placed for 3 or 5 hr in solutions of the test com
