Abstract
Abstract 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone can be converted into a monomeric u.v. absorber, 4-benzoyl-3-hydroxyphenyl acrylate, which can be homopolymerised to give a polymeric u.v. absorber; it can also be terpolymerised with styrene and acrylonitrile in the presence of polybutadiene latex to form an ABS polyblend containing bound u.v. absorber. The efficiencies of unmodified 2,4-dihydroxybenzophone, the homopolymer and its bound derivative as u.v. stabilisers in an ABS polyblend are studied by i.r. spectroscopy and embrittlement testing. It is found that bonding the u.v. absorber with the polyblend does not detract from its efficiency. The homopolymer is slightly inferior as a u.v. stabiliser to both unmodified 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone and its bound derivative. Extraction with methanol at room temperature completely removes free 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone from ABS film, whereas the homopolymeric stabiliser is only partially removed. Extraction with methanol has no effect on the efficiency of the u.v. absorber bound to the ABS polyblend.
