Abstract
Many research efforts across the globe are directed at the conversion of cellulosic feedstock into liquid fuels. One attractive approach entails the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose, which is then subjected to isomerization and dehydration to give 5hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Ultimately, HMF can be converted into 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) or g-valerolactone (VL). One attractive intermediate in this area is 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF), which can be obtained by the hydrogenation of HMF. Similarly, xylose, the main component of hemicellulose, can undergo acid-catalyzed dehydration to furfural, which can be further hydrogenated to furfuryl alcohol (Scheme 1).
