Abstract
Abstract Poly(3-methylthiophene) has been synthesized as thin films in acetonitrile using PF − 6 , ClO − 4 , BF − 4 and CF 3 SO − 3 as the doping anion and Li + and Bu 4 N + as the counter-cation. Electrochemical characterization of these films using the same electrolyte as that used for synthesis shows that their electrochemical properties are controlled mainly by the anion and can be discussed on the basis of the structural parameters of the anions. Electrochemical characterization of the films has also been carried out with a different electrolyte from the one used for synthesis. The discussion of the results leads us to propose that whereas the nature of the anion plays a determining role on the structure of the polymer during its sythesis, the nature of the cation affects essentially the behaviour of the polymer films during the charge-discharge processes. A memory effect thus exists associated with the anion used for electrochemical synthesis.
