Abstract
Abstract The luminescence of dithiooxamide, N,N′-dimethyldithiooxamide and tetramethyldithiooxamide has been investigated. The first two compounds exhibit an intense luminescence at 77°K (τ=10 −5 sec) which is assigned as 3 Γ nπ* → 1 Γ 1 ;a weak long-wavelength absorption (e max =1 & M −1 cm −1 ) is assigned as 3 Γ nπ* ← 1 Γ 1 . The tetramethyl derivative does not emit, an observation consistent with its severely-twisted conformation, with its consequent description as a composite of two “nearly-isoalted thioacetamide units”, and with the non-emissivity of such thioacetamide entities.
