Abstract
The therapeutic amelioration of ischemia or hypoxia-induced neuronal dysfunction and disability is one of the most important tasks in clinical neurology. A novel drug, Sabeluzole (R 58735), has been shown to improve the posthypoxic survival chances in rats [10], prevent neuronal damage induced by hypoxic insult in rats [9], and antagonize posthypoxic memory deficits in guinea pigs [4]. Apart from these antihypoxic effects, the compound has also been shown to improve learning capacity and memory functions of rats [3], guinea pigs [6], and humans [5]. However, the mechanisms underlying these beneficial effects of Sabeluzole on neuronal functions are not understood. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Sabeluzole on the somatosensory evoked cortical potentials (SSEP) and the spontaneous EEG activities in order to obtain more information about the mode of action of Sabeluzole.
