Abstract
Abstract The equilibrium of hydrolytic deamination of cytidine to uridine and ammonia has been investigated in the presence of bacterial cytidine deaminase. At pH 7.0 and ionic strength 2.0, the apparent free energy of deamination of cytidine is -5.8 kcal per mole at 25°. N4-Methylcytidine is thermodynamically more stable to hydrolysis than cytidine, and cytidine deaminase catalyzes its formation in appreciable yield from uridine and methylamine at alkaline pH.
