Abstract
SummaryA study was carried out in 29 hospitalized patients with severe asthma of infectious origin. All patients were treated with 2 g per day of either erythromycin stearate or ethylsuccinate plus concomitant glucocorticoids and/or ACTH for a mean period of 8 days. The results, assessed in terms of improvement of clinical symptomatology and respiratory function, showed normalization of their condition in all 15 patients with reversible airways function and an amelioration in the other 14 patients. Tolerance was excellent, except in 5 patients who had transient nausea. It is suggested that, because of its good tissue distribution and low capacity to induce sensitization, erythromycin should be considered as an antibiotic of choice in the treatment of infectious factors in asthma.
