Abstract
A number of studies (Kayser, 1964; Cannon et alii, 1965; Hanna, 1966; Floyd et alii, 1967) undertaken in the past six years have demonstrated that ethacrynic acid is a reliable, potent, and safe diuretic for all œdematous states. Most reported studies are based on hospital ward patients in whom the diuretic response may be influenced by concomitant use of digitalis or the benefit of bed rest. With this in mind, a clinical trial was undertaken to evaluate the suitability of ethacrynic acid for routine diuretic treatment of ambulatory patients suffering from œdematous states of varying ætiology.
