Abstract
Abstract The use of cyclohexanol in the cryoscopic microdetermination of molecular weights was critically investigated. It was found that the purity of the solvent is of primary importance, and a simple method of purification was developed. The molal depression constant for cyclohexanol melting at 24.2–24.4 °C. determined with Bureau of Standards benzoic acid is 42.9, confirming a previous published value in this range (42.5), though values as low as 37 have been reported. The method has application both for research problems and for teaching. The high hygroscopicity of cyclohexanol is of primary importance; unless care is used in the method to avoid exposure to moist atmospheres, appreciable errors result.
