Abstract
Previous studies with pipotiazine palmitate ( 19.552 R.P.) have shown that it has both potent neuroleptic properties and a longer duration of action than the long-acting phenothiazines investigated so far (Lambert ( 1970) ) , O d e s ( 1970) ) . In the psychiatric department of the Central Hospital, Slagelse, Denmark, a selected group of patients was treated with pipotiazine palmitate in an attempt to evaluate the effects, side-effects and duration of action of each injection. The department functions as an open acute reception ward, the patients usually being admitted for only a short time before being transferred to the after-care out-patient unit. Patients who cannot be treated in an open ward, or whose condition has not improved enough after about 3 months to justify their discharge, are generally transferred to a state hospital. The patients in the ward therefore differ in some degree from the more chronic clientele of the state hospitals. Furthermore, the patient who has received the largest dose of pipotiazine palmitate so far in Nordic countries is included in the study, and this is another reason for the publication of the material.
