Abstract
Yellow crystals of tetrakis(4-methylpyridine)nickel(II)hexafluorophosphate, C24H28F12N4NiP2, are monoclinic, a = 19.709(5), b = 9.866(2), c = 16.515(9) A, β = 101.54(4)°, Z = 4, space group C2/c. The structure was solved by Patterson methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares methods to R = 0.071 for 1002 observed reflections. The structure consists of a square-planar array of 4-methylpyridine ligands about nickel with hexafluorophosphate groups above and below the plane. The Ni—N distances are 1.916(9) and 1.919(10) A with the pitch of the rings 102.06° and 97.32°. The shortest Ni—F distances are 3.031(8) A. The structure shows that the anions are not fully coordinated to nickel but are nonetheless held in axial positions by weak, essentially ionic, interactions.Tetrakis(pyridine)nickel(II)hexafluoroarsenate has been found to undergo a reversible structure change over the temperature range 180 to 200 K. Electronic and vibrational spectra and magnetic susceptibility studies suggest that the compound...
