Abstract
Abstract The fluorescence properties of methyl 4-(N,N-dimethylamino)benzoate in a variety of solvents are reported. “Normal” fluorescence from a distribution of excited solute/solvent arrangements is observed in most solvents. Additionally, in acetonitrile, a longer wavelength fluorescence band is observed which is attributed to excited dimer fluorescence. It is proposed that the excited dimer is formed by direct excitation from the ground state.
