Abstract
Pulse radiolysis and laser excitation were used to determine intersystem crossing quantum yields in 9-acetylanthracene (9AA) and 1-aceanthrenone (1) and 2-aceanthrenone (2). Triplet-triplet absorption spectra and molar absorptivities of the triplet states are reported for each compound. The intersystem crossing quantum yield of 9AA is 0.8 +/- 0.1 while that for 1 and 2 is 0.6 and 0.4, respectively. The lack of fluorescence in nonpolar fluid media for 9AA is a consequence of intersystem crossing and is not due to the proximity effect. The rigidity of the carbonyl group constrained into a coplanar geometry in 1 and 2 appears to enhance the proximity effect and decrease intersystem crossing.
