Abstract
Abstract 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole is shown to undergo protonation and deprotonation reactions as well as excited-state intramolecular proton transfer in aqueous ethanol solutions of varying pH . At acidic pH there appear to be four different excited species which contribute to the photophysics, giving rise to complex fluorescence properties. pK values for some of the equilibria are presented and compared with the corresponding values for 2-phenyl- and 2-(2′-methoxyphenyl)benzothiazole.
