Abstract
LITHIUM fluoride powder is now being used extensively for thermoluminescent dosimetry of ionizing radiations because of its good tissue-equivalence with respect to photon energy, and its reported absence of fading1–3. We have found hitherto unreported changes of response with time, predominantly manifested by fading of the read-out by some 10–20 per cent at 3 weeks after irradiation, followed by a tendency to increase towards the initial value at 6–8 weeks. This fading can cause difficulties in practical use unless care is taken to read-out specimens at the same time after irradiation. The fading reported here is other than any occurring in the first 24 h.
