Abstract
The fate and effects of o-xylene and carbon tetrachloride on methanogens and sulfate reducing bacteria were investigated using serum bottles. Up to 750 mg/1 of o-xylene did not cause any inhibition to either the methanogens or the sulfate reducers. Up to 64 mg/l of carbon tetrachloride did not inhibit the sulfate reducers whereas only 6 mg/l of the toxicant inhibited the methanogens. The study indicated the potential of engineering application of sulfate reducers to biological treatment of hazardous wastes.
