Abstract
Ten flavonoids were isolated from the ethanolic extract of propolis collected in the Yangpyeong of Korea. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic methods and identified as pinostrobin, tectochrysin, pinobanksin 3-acetoxy-7-methyl ether, 7-methylkaempferol, pinobanksin acetate, pinobanksin 3-(2-methyl)butylate, alpinone, pinobanksin, pinocembrin, and chrysin. These compounds exhibited an inhibitory effect on DNA single strand breakage by the Fenton reaction. Several flavonoids exhibited moderate scavenging activity against 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) radical cations, while all flavonoids showed no activity against superoxide and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals.
