Abstract
Abstract The fluorescence of 4-methylumbelliferyl α- d -mannopyranoside is quenched on binding to concanavalin A, this appears to be caused by the low polarity of the binding site of the aglycone. The phenomenon has been used to measure the association constant as a function of pH, revealing a dependence on a group with p K a 3.5. Methyl α- d -mannoside and myo-inositol displace 4-methylumbelliferyl α- d -mannopyranoside from its complex with concanavalin allowing the binding constants of these molecules to be estimated, myo-inositol binds less strongly than methyl α- d -mannoside.
