Abstract
Abstract Several compounds in the pyrimidine drug class have been developed commercially for the treatment, control, and/or prevention of nematode parasites in nearly all species of domestic mammals, including dogs, cats, horses, swine, cattle, sheep, and goats. The specific compounds that have been marketed include citrate, embonate, pamoate or tartrate salts of pyrantel, morantel, and oxantel. This chapter lists examples of the various pyrimidine formulations (eg, suspensions, pastes, tablets and chewables, medicated articles or feed premixes, boluses, sustained-release devices) that have been approved for commercial distribution to veterinarians or consumers. Certain items of regulatory terminology are defined and reviewed as they apply to the pyrimidine drug class. The anthelmintic properties and major clinical applications of marketed pyrimidine compounds are discussed for each domestic species with an approved label indication.
