Abstract
Abstract The aim of the paper is to emphasize the main components of a reproducible technique for growing large single crystals of barium metaborate (BBO) suitable for industrial application and the ways of realizing them on the basis of our practice. We have established the overriding importance of controlling the degree of polycondensation of boron and oxygen components of molten solutions and of periodically correcting it. High axial and radial temperature gradients in crystallization medium are important as well. We show the need for specified shaping of the seed growth pyramid and importance of optimal cooling conditions for decanted crystals. Integral realization of the above requirements allows one to control monocrystalline seeding, size, and structural quality of crystals grown by the TSSG method, as well as the yield of optical grade material and its functional characteristics.
