Abstract
Abstract A review is given of the particular physico-chemical properties of partially quaternized tertiary amine polybases of the poly[thio-1-(N-N-diethylaminomethyl)ethylene]-type (Q-P(TDAE)X). These bifunctional polybases exhibit a pH-induced globule-to-coil cooperative transition. The inner part of the globules being hydrophobic, macromolecules form a molecularly dispersed organic microphase in water which can be used to dissolve and thus temporarily entrap lipophilic compounds. The resulting increase of solubility and trapping effects are named molecular microencapsulation. Investigations to show whether such polymer-drug combinations are stable in vivo are presented.
