Abstract
This research is an effort towards the synthesis of a novel Guar Gum (GG) based flocculant by grafting it with Itaconic Acid (IA) using microwave irradiation technique. Different grades were synthesized by optimizing the reaction parameters like monomer and initiator concentration, reaction time and other factors. Modification was confirmed by different characterization techniques such as SEM, TGA, FTIR, CHNS, etc. Flocculation efficiency of best grade (GG-g-IA) after optimization is seen to be high as 88.15% for kaolin and 81.36% for coal fine. Also, for river water clarification and municipal waste water treatment it is very effective to remove many pollutants including lowering down of BOD, alkalinity and hardness than compared to commercially available flocculant (Alum) and other graft-co-polymers.
