Abstract
The generation of lithium chloride in acetonitrile via metathesis produces both unsolvated LiCl and small amounts of {LiCl·MeCN}∞, an unladdered, single-strand polymer with a {LiCl}∞ backbone. The molecular architecture of this aggregate is surprisingly different from that of other complexes of alkali metal halides with Lewis bases. Its formation can be rationalized by considering the behavior of incipient LiCl fragments under the influence of solvation.
