Abstract
Summary Microautoradiographic techniques were utilized to localize quizalofop (ethyl-2-[4-[(6-chloro-2-quinoxalinyl)oxy]phenoxy]propanoate) and fluazifop [butyl-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]oxy] phenoxy] propanoate) in downy brome ( Bromus tectorum L. # 1 BROTE) spikelets. Excised downy brome spikelets were fed 14 C-quizalofop (ethyl ester) or 14 C-fluazifop (butyl ester). Treated spikelets were processed by chemical fixation and dehydration or by freeze substitution. Following resin infiltration and embedment, the spikelets were sectioned and coated with photoemulsion to produce autoradiographs. Compartmentation of radiolabel from both herbicides was similar. Radiolabel was found in the xylem and phloem of the pedicels. Substantial levels of radioactivity were detected in chlorenchyma cells of the pedicels. Greatest concentration of radiolabel was found in developing pollen grains, suggesting that these herbicides may interfere with pollen development or function.
