Abstract
A new hexanedioic acid analogue, (2S,5R)-2-ethyl-5-methylhexanedioic acid (1), along with two known compounds, thymine (2) and cerevisterol (3), were isolated from Penicillium sp. OC-4, an endophytic fungus associated with Orchidantha chinensis, which has been used in folk medicine for the treatment of fever and cough. The structure of compound 1 was unequivocally elucidated on the basis of one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopic (1H NMR, 13C NMR, COSY, HSQC, HMBC), HR-ESI-MS, optical rotation data, and IR spectrum. The antibacterial and antioxidant activities of compound 1 were investigated. The compound displayed strong antioxidant activity with EC50 value of 1.08 mg/mL on superoxide anion racdicals.
