Abstract
This paper sets out a new derivatization method for characterisation of complex mixtures of ethoxylated alcohols and alkyl ether sulfates by means of HPLC-UV. Therefore 2-furoyl chloride is used for the first time as derivatization reagent. The separation of the derivatives is carried out according to the lengths of the alkyl and the ethoxylic chains by reversed-phase HPLC-UV with acetonitrile-water as gradient. Due to the high conformity in response behaviour of the 2-furoyl derivatives, component independent calibration is applicable without all functional homologues as reference substances being available. Additionally, even low volatile highly ethoxylated mixtures, that are not detectable by means of gaschromatography, can be determined after derivatization with 2-furoyl chloride.
