Abstract
Abstract Low temperature (10 K) infrared spectra demonstrate that trimethylamine oxide dihydrate contains tightly bound, tricoordinate water, and show that the hydrate water and the negative oxygen atoms form a structure similar to the water—fluoride cluster in tetraethylammonium fluoride dihydrate. Spectral analysis and mechanistic considerations suggest an H 8 X 6 species of C i , symmetry; definitive assignment of structure awaits diffraction studies. N,N -Dimethylpyrrolidinium fluoride forms a dihydrate of similar structure, and also a monohydrate containing an H 4 O 2 F 2− 2 cluster. Contrary to previous reports, trimethylamine oxide does not form a monohydrate.
